Central Park is 843 acres. Most tourists see about 10% of it. This itinerary walks you from the south end to the north over a full day, hitting the highlights and the hidden pockets.
**9:00 AM — Enter at Columbus Circle (59th St).** Start at the Maine Monument fountain. Head north into the park on the west drive. You'll pass the Heckscher Ballfields on your right.
**9:30 AM — The Pond & Gapstow Bridge.** The first pond you'll reach. Gapstow Bridge is one of the most photographed spots — low stone arch over still water with midtown skyscrapers reflecting.
**10:00 AM — Central Park Zoo (small fee).** Optional — quick 45-minute visit, good for families. Skip if solo.
**10:45 AM — The Mall & Literary Walk.** The only straight-line promenade in the park, lined with some of the oldest American elms in the country. Statues of Shakespeare, Burns, Scott. Walk north.
**11:15 AM — Bethesda Terrace & Fountain.** The emotional heart of the park. The twin staircases, the arcade with Spanish tile ceilings, the fountain with the Angel of the Waters. Sit on the steps for 15 minutes.
**11:45 AM — Bow Bridge & the Lake.** The beautiful cast-iron bridge in the movies. Rent a rowboat at the Loeb Boathouse on the other side if you're romantic.
**12:30 PM — Lunch.** The Boathouse Restaurant is touristy and pricey but scenic. Alternatively, bring a sandwich and picnic at Strawberry Fields (west side, 72nd) at the John Lennon memorial.
**1:30 PM — The Ramble.** Disappear into the wooded heart of the park. 38 acres of trails, birds, and silence. Take the winding dirt paths — if you're lost, you're doing it right.
**2:30 PM — Belvedere Castle & the Great Lawn.** Climb the castle for the best free view of the park. The Great Lawn stretches out below — summer Philharmonic concerts happen here.
**3:30 PM — Delacorte Theater & Shakespeare Garden.** The free summer Shakespeare-in-the-Park venue. The garden beside it is gorgeous and has every plant mentioned in Shakespeare's plays.
**4:00 PM — The Reservoir (86th-96th Street).** 1.58-mile running loop around a gorgeous reservoir. Walk half of it. The Central Park West view is pure NYC.
**5:00 PM — North Woods & the Pool.** The least-visited section of the park. Genuinely wild-feeling — waterfalls, old stone bridges, almost no tourists.
**6:00 PM — Conservatory Garden (105th St & 5th Ave).** The only formal garden in the park. Italian style, French style, and English style all in one. Free. Incredibly peaceful.
**You've walked about 5 miles and seen Central Park the way it was designed to be seen.**
