New York is magnificent in the rain β€” everything gets cinematic and the crowds disappear. Here's how to spend a rainy day without getting soaked.

**9:30 AM β€” Grand Central Terminal.** Start under that starry ceiling. Explore the Whispering Gallery. Grab coffee and pastries at the downstairs food market (Koryodang is underrated).

**10:30 AM β€” New York Public Library (Stephen A. Schwarzman Building).** Walk 5 minutes west to 42nd & 5th. The Rose Reading Room is jaw-dropping and free. The Children's Literature room has the original stuffed animals that inspired *Winnie-the-Pooh*.

**11:30 AM β€” Walk through Bryant Park.** The covered pavilions let you stay dry. Winter: ice rink. Other seasons: free wifi, chess tables, pretty European-style park.

**12:30 PM β€” Lunch at Grand Central Oyster Bar.** Iconic vaulted-tile ceiling, clam chowder, and the same place since 1913. It's right under Grand Central, all indoors.

**2:00 PM β€” Museum time. Pick one:** - The Morgan Library & Museum for books and manuscripts (1.5 hours, intimate) - MoMA for modern art (2 hours, iconic) - The Frick Collection for Old Masters (1.5 hours, quiet)

**4:00 PM β€” Tea or coffee break.** Cafe Sabarsky inside the Neue Galerie (Upper East Side) for Viennese coffee and apple strudel. Or LadurΓ©e in SoHo for French macarons. Both are worth the trip just for the room.

**5:30 PM β€” Underground exploring.** Duck into a subway station and ride any train. The R, N, and Q trains go through underground caverns. Alternatively: walk through the Oculus at World Trade Center β€” Santiago Calatrava's bone-white transit hub is surreal and indoors.

**7:00 PM β€” Dinner somewhere warm and old.** Katz's Deli. Keens Steakhouse. Peter Luger (book ahead). The old-school atmosphere hits different when it's pouring outside.

**Evening: Jazz or Broadway.** Village Vanguard for jazz, or Broadway show. Both are 100% indoors and memorable.

**The rain makes this day better, not worse.** Umbrellas from any street vendor for $5.
