Kids change the calculus. Museums are a hit for 90 minutes, then they're done. Parks and hands-on stuff win. Food needs to be fast and not too adventurous. Here's a two-day plan that works for ages 5-12.

**DAY 1 — Parks & Animals**

Morning: Central Park Zoo (small, manageable, 2-hour visit). Afterwards, walk north through Central Park to Heckscher Playground — one of the best playgrounds in the city. Lunch at the playground carts or Shake Shack on the nearby Central Park Zoo plaza.

Afternoon: American Museum of Natural History. This is a winner with kids — dinosaurs, the blue whale, the gems room, the diorama halls. 2-3 hours is plenty. Exit on 79th and Central Park West.

Snack break: Levain Bakery on 74th Street (original location) for the famous chocolate chip cookie, eat it on a park bench.

Evening: Early dinner at Shake Shack or Joe's Pizza. Back to hotel for an early bedtime — you all need it.

**DAY 2 — Brooklyn Bridge & Island Adventures**

Morning: Take the subway to DUMBO. Brooklyn Bridge Park has six themed playgrounds along Pier 6 (climbing pyramids, sand pits, splash fountains in summer). Jane's Carousel is right there — $2 a ride, gorgeous.

Lunch: Shake Shack in DUMBO or grab slices from Juliana's Pizza.

Afternoon: NYC Ferry from DUMBO to Governors Island (seasonal, summer only — if not summer, substitute the Brooklyn Children's Museum). Rent bikes, explore the car-free paths, climb the Hills, have a picnic. Kids love this.

Return ferry to Manhattan. Ice cream at Van Leeuwen or Ample Hills.

Evening: Early dinner and hotel. Maybe the Times Square M&M store or Nintendo NY if the kids still have energy (they won't).

**Tips:** Bring a stroller even for kids who usually don't use one — the walks add up. Subway bathrooms don't exist; use restaurants. The Hop-On Hop-Off buses are not worth it; save money, use the subway.
