Brooklyn's most famous neighborhood β where hipsters invented modern coffee culture, the waterfront gives you the best Manhattan view, and Smorgasburg runs every weekend.
Williamsburg is the Brooklyn everyone has heard of β the neighborhood that launched "Brooklyn" as a global brand in the 2000s. Third-wave coffee, craft beer, artisanal bread, vinyl record shops, vintage stores, tattoo parlors, natural wine. Much of that is still here, layered onto a Polish/Puerto Rican working-class neighborhood that's been eroded but not erased.
**Walk:** Take the L train to Bedford Avenue and start on Bedford itself β the main commercial spine, lined with cafes and boutiques. Walk west toward the waterfront to North 6th Street Pier (great Manhattan view). South Williamsburg around Havemeyer and Grand is quieter and funkier. The East River State Park is where Smorgasburg happens Saturdays April-October.
**What makes it special:** The waterfront. The view of Manhattan across the East River from Williamsburg is the best in Brooklyn, and you can walk it for free anytime. Also the concentration of excellent food is unreal.
**Eat & drink:** Peter Luger Steakhouse (since 1887, reservation essential), Smorgasburg (Saturdays), Leuca, Lilia (Italian, world-famous pasta), DevociΓ³n Coffee.
