NYC in June: Pride, Summer Begins, Everything Outside

June · New York City

← All seasonal guides

June is the beginning of New York summer — warm but not yet oppressive, long days that don't get dark until after 8:30pm, and an explosion of free outdoor events. It's also Pride Month, and NYC Pride is the biggest in the world. Every neighborhood is celebrating something. The energy is unmatched.

**The weather:** Average high 79°F, low 63°F. Occasionally muggy, but mostly perfect. Thunderstorms roll through in the afternoon.

**What locals do:** - **NYC Pride (last weekend of June)** — the march on Sunday is massive, 2 million people, hours long. But Pride Week starts the weekend before with events, rallies, and parties all across Manhattan and Brooklyn. The Stonewall Inn in the West Village is the epicenter. - **Shakespeare in the Park begins** — free performances at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Line up at the Delacorte at 6am for same-day free tickets or enter the TodayTix lottery. - **Museum Mile Festival (second Tuesday in June)** — all nine Museum Mile museums are free from 6-9pm. Insane value. - **SummerStage concerts in Central Park** — free concerts in Rumsey Playfield throughout the summer. - **Governors Island** — weekends are packed, weekdays are quiet and beautiful. - **Mermaid Parade (third Saturday in June)** — Coney Island's eccentric celebration of summer solstice. Body paint, beach costumes, thousands of participants. - **Rooftop bar season** — 230 Fifth, The Press Lounge, Westlight in Williamsburg, the Metropolitan Museum's roof garden.

**What to eat in June:** - **First heirloom tomatoes** at the Union Square Greenmarket - **Soft-shell crabs** still in season - **Outdoor seafood** at Grand Banks (dockside on a historic ship moored in Tribeca) - **Ice cream is now acceptable again** — Morgenstern's, Van Leeuwen, Ample Hills

**Best for:** LGBTQ+ travelers (Pride!), families, outdoor enthusiasts, anyone who loves live music, free event seekers.

**Local tip:** The Met rooftop garden is one of the best (and least crowded) places to watch sunset in NYC, from May through October. $30 museum admission includes roof access.
