The Met's brilliant, overlooked Brooklyn cousin — same quality collection, a fraction of the crowds, and the phenomenal Egyptian wing.
The Brooklyn Museum is the best museum in New York that nobody visits. The Egyptian collection rivals the Met's — more intimate, less crowded, with stunning individual pieces including a life-sized obsidian pharaoh head that will stop you in your tracks. The American art wing is outstanding. The feminist art collection (Judy Chicago's *The Dinner Party* has a permanent installation here) is unrivaled.
The building itself is a McKim, Mead & White Beaux-Arts beauty next to Prospect Park and the Botanic Garden — you can make a full day of all three for the price of museum admission.
**Local tip:** First Saturday of every month is free admission 5-11pm with live music, DJs, and pop-up programming — it becomes Brooklyn's best party. Regular suggested-donation admission applies any day for NYC residents.
**Best for:** A quieter museum experience, first-time Brooklyn visitors, combining with Prospect Park or the Botanic Garden next door. Easy subway access via 2/3 train to Eastern Parkway.
