Governors Island

A car-free 172-acre island a 7-minute ferry ride from Manhattan — hammocks, hills, art installations, and zero honking.

Take the Governors Island ferry from Battery Maritime Building and seven minutes later you're in a different city: no cars, no subway rumble, no sirens. Just rolling lawns, rental bikes, a glass art museum, hammock groves, and views of the harbor you can't get anywhere else.

The Hills — four artificial hills at the south end — are the highlight. Climb Outlook Hill for a 360° view of Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Statue of Liberty, and the Verrazzano Bridge all at once. Roll down the grassy slopes if no one's looking. Everyone does it.

**Local tip:** Rent bikes at the dock — the island loop is 2.5 miles of smooth paved paths. Pack a picnic (food on-island is limited and pricey). Book the pre-sunset ferry and stay until closing — the skyline at twilight from here is unreal.

**Best for:** A half-day escape, families, cyclists, anyone who wants a beach day without leaving NYC. Open May 1 through October 31.
