Walk into a hot dog shop, step into a phone booth, and emerge into one of the best cocktail bars in America.

PDT is the speakeasy that started the revival. You enter through Crif Dogs on St. Marks Place — a neon-lit hot dog shop that looks like it sells you a corn dog for $4. In the corner is an old-school phone booth. Pick up the phone, tell the hostess your name, and if you have a reservation the back wall of the booth swings open. Step through and you're in an intimate 45-seat cocktail bar with bartenders who take drinks as seriously as chefs take Michelin stars.

The cocktails are immaculate — every drink is a small story involving housemade bitters, herb gardens, and 75 years of cocktail history. The menu rotates. Trust the bartender if you're unsure. Food comes from Crif Dogs next door; the bacon-wrapped "Good Morning" dog is unreasonably good at 11pm.

**Local tip:** Reservations open exactly 30 days in advance at 3pm, get taken in minutes, and are the only way in most nights. Try for a Monday or Tuesday if you can't get a weekend. Dress code is "smart casual" — they'll turn you away in flip-flops. Two-drink minimum, cash or card.

**Best for:** A date night showstopper, cocktail nerds, out-of-town friends who want the quintessential NYC hidden bar story.
