The High Line

The High Line shouldn't work. An abandoned railroad trestle hanging 30 feet above the meatpacking district — left to rot for 20 years, nearly demolished — somehow became one of the most celebrated urban designs of the century.

Walk it from south to north on a weekday morning. The plantings are intentional chaos: native grasses, rusty metalwork, birch trees growing out of concrete. Every few blocks you stumble into a commissioned artwork or a wooden lounge chair positioned perfectly for a nap. The views pivot between glossy Hudson Yards glass and gritty Chelsea rooftops.

**Local tip:** Enter at Gansevoort (south end) for the Whitney Museum connection, or at 34th (north end) for Hudson Yards and the Edge observation deck. Midweek mornings are dreamy. Weekend afternoons are a crush — skip them.

**Best for:** A contemplative walk, outdoor art lovers, summer evenings. Free to enter, open 7am-10pm in season.
