The 90-year-old Greenwich Village basement jazz club where Coltrane and Monk recorded — still the best seat in the world for live jazz.

Since 1935, the Village Vanguard has been in the same basement at the corner of 7th Ave South — a red triangular room with 123 seats, a small stage, and a history list that reads like jazz Wikipedia: John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Wynton Marsalis. At least 100 legendary albums were recorded live here.

Nothing about the space has been updated. The acoustics are perfect. The sightlines are perfect. You sit at tiny tables twenty feet from musicians who are playing the hardest of their lives because they know the legacy of the room. Two sets a night, 8:30 and 10:30. The Monday night Vanguard Jazz Orchestra is a tradition going back 55 years.

**Local tip:** Book in advance on their website — it's $40 cover + one drink minimum. Arrive 20 minutes before showtime to get a good seat (first-come first-served for most nights). No food beyond snacks — eat dinner first at a Village restaurant. Cash or card for the cover; drinks are cash-preferred.

**Best for:** Jazz lovers, a classic NYC night out, a birthday, a date that will be remembered forever.
